What We Are Looking For

Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all.

We’re searching for a dynamic Regulatory Counsel to join a world-class legal team and help chart the legal frontier of self-driving technology. In this role, you will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory, and work closely with the Government Relations, Safety, and Business Development and Product Strategy teams to navigate, shape, and design compliance strategies for evolving federal and state autonomous vehicle regulatory frameworks. This is a unique opportunity to tackle first-of-their kind legal questions and directly enable the Aurora Driver’s rapid commercialization and geographic scaling.

In this role you will

  • Provide cross-functional and actionable legal and policy advice to teams across the company throughout all stages of the Aurora Driver’s commercial deployment
  • Advise internal teams regarding ongoing legislative and regulatory processes and trends, identify their impact on Aurora’s business and products, and design related compliance strategies
  • Think creatively to address novel and complex legal issues raised by autonomous vehicle technology and to shape the regulatory frameworks needed to support rapid deployment and geographic expansion
  • Own strategic compliance roadmaps with federal and state autonomous vehicle requirements, including securing operational authorizations, managing data and incident reporting, and developing external responses to regulatory inquiries
  • Bolster the broader legal function by partnering with the wider legal team on occasional targeted projects, including incident response, dispute resolution, and transactional matters

Required Qualifications

  • JD degree and active member of a State Bar
  • 3-6 years of relevant in-house, law firm, and/or government experience
  • Proven track record of handling complex regulatory and legislative matters, with an appetite for diving deep into multi-jurisdictional regulatory and policy issues
  • Demonstrated excellence in analytical, written, and oral communication, with an ability to collaborate and influence cross-functionally
  • Highly organized and capable of managing multiple simultaneous projects under deadline pressure, while providing practical, solutions-oriented advice to stakeholders

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior experience in the automotive, trucking, or other highly-regulated safety-sensitive industries
  • Knowledge of the autonomous vehicle industry and relevant laws and safety standards
  • Familiarity with adjacent legal and regulatory frameworks, including products liability, commercial law, data governance, privacy, or trade compliance

For roles based in Mountain View, CA and San Francisco, CA: The salary range for this position is $181,000 - $290,000 per year.

Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
