: Summary: HYBRID ROLE - (WEEKLY OFFICE TIME IN COLORADO) ______________________________________________________________________ Works with a team responsible for the installation, deployment, maintenance, administration, troubleshooting, and enhancement of Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, and Linux workstation computers, helping to ensure consistent and reliable operation of NCAR Research Information Technology (NRIT) computing environments. Responds to end-user requests for assistance as a subject matter expert (SME) on platform/discipline focused teams determined by need and through consultation with NRIT leadership. The successful candidate wil be joining a team of administrative and IT professionals in a supportive environment that prioritizes teamwork, psychological safety, creativity, and staff development. What You Will Do Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role. Provides in-person, online, and telephone support to end users of hardware, software and services. Follows NRIT workflows to troubleshoot and resolve bugs, errors, failures, outages and access issues reported through ServiceDesk and other channels. Assists in the setup and testing of equipment for workshops and seminars. Provides assistance to workshop coordinators and attendees. Collaborates with technical staff outside of NRIT (network engineers, multimedia support staff, et al.) as necessary to resolve issues. Assists in the maintenance of NRIT-managed computer systems (Windows, Mac, Linux). Tasks include writing general utility scripts to automate systems tasks; installing/maintaining/upgrading operating systems and application software; monitoring system performance and gathering systems statistics for recommendations. Performs research for problem solving new hardware and software products to improve end user computing and systems administration tasks. Assists users in defining and implementing special applications and hardware requirements. Makes recommendations on solutions and best practices. Provides adhoc user education in the use of NRIT-managed hardware, software and services. Creates and maintains technical documentation for end users and other systems administrators. Attends check-ins, technology demonstration and other meetings coordinated within NRIT. Represents NRIT on various org-wide focus groups and committees as determined by need and through consultation with NRIT leadership; provides updates to NRIT colleagues on relevant issues/decisions discussed in committees. Assists with hardware and software lifecycle management. Assists in the maintenance of hardware and software inventory lists; collaborates with property administrators to implement changing inventory practices. Attends workshops and training sessions to maintain up-to-date knowledge of system administration techniques and best practices, cybersecurity polices, industry trends and mitigation techniques, and to develop new skills and areas of expertise. Who We'd Love To Join Our Team Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria: Education and Experience (Required/Desired): Bachelor's degree in computer-related field; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience (e.g. Associates degree and four years of experience). OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Progressive experience with configuration management systems such as Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), JAMF, and Ansible highly desired but not required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required/Desired)
  • Advanced customer service skills in all areas of IT support for scientific staff.
  • Working knowledge of systems administration in a heterogeneous computing environment.
  • Foundational understanding of operating systems, networking, storage and system component interoperability.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to a project plan, prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills: the ability to create clear and concise technical documentation, review and edit existing documents and deliver informal training presentations to staff.
  • A demonstrated ability to solve problems requiring extensive analysis.
  • Basic understanding of scripting/programming including one or more of the following: PowerShell, C#, VB, DOS, WMI, AppleScript, bash/csh, Python, Perl, C.
